18-Wheeler Causes Pile Up Near Waco
October 27. 2011 10:43 by

A truck driver’s attempt to reverse his 18-wheeler into oncoming traffic on Interstate 35 near the Forrest St. exit in Waco, Texas resulted in a ten car pileup. Two people were taken to the hospital to treat their injuries, but none of the injuries are believed to be serious. Investigating officers are reporting that the 18-wheeler was carrying an oversized load at the time, and the truck driver realized he would not fit under the overpass. The truck driver stopped the 18-wheeler in the middle of traffic and began to reverse, which caused multiple car accidents behind him. It appears that the root of the problem is the trucking company’s failure to properly use TxDOT’s automated system known as TXPROS, which charts out the proper routes for commercial trucks based on the size, weight chart out the proper route for the truck. Some observers are concerned about the cause of the trucking accident because truck drivers now input the information into TXPROS rather than TxDOT employees, and they fear that more of these types of accidents are likely to happen more frequently without proper training.

Fortunately in this case, this truck driver’s errors did not result in the loss of life or permanent injuries. Many trucking accidents do have tragic consequences, however. What the above accident does highlight, however, is the need for an experienced trucking accident attorney who knows the rules and regulations that control the trucking industry. Otherwise, valuable evidence of negligence can be overlooked. Witnesses say that the hit and run suspect was traveling east on Grauwyler when he drove into the opposite lane of traffic then lost control of his car while attempting to avoid a collision. The driver then drove onto a sidewalk striking the victims, throwing 7 year old Tinniyah high into the air and dragging Ms. Sago about 50 feet. A witness to the hit and run followed the driver as he fled but stopped when the driver abandoned the car and threatened the witness. Both victims of the hit and run accident remain in critical condition at local hospitals. Police have the car involved in the accident and hope that it will provide clues as to the identity of the driver.
