Jurors Left in Tears After Paralyzed Girl Victimized by Drunk Driver Reads Letter
December 10. 2012 13:49 by

In the summer of 2011, then 7-year-old Xitclalli "Chilli" Vasquez was left paralyzed from the chest down in an accident involving a drunk driver. In July, Chilli and her sister were riding in a car with their aunt to a mall to get their nails and hair done, according to news reports. It was during this trip that the aunt's car was struck by a car driven by Jeremy Solis, who was found to be intoxicated. The vehicle driven by Solis had been stolen in Fort Worth. He was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.23, nearly three times the legal limit.

Recently, Solis was in court for sentencing. It was during this court hearing that jurors heard what Chilli had written in a letter to Solis about her experiences since she had become paralyzed. The jury, those present in the courtroom and even Solis were left in tears after Chilli's mother read the 4-page letter, which talked about her experiences in the hospital, how she would cry because she couldn't do things she used to do, how she had to use her thumb to answer questions because she could not talk. One question Chilli had written in the letter was, "Look at what I said and the words I said and tell me how I look and feel. How do you feel today? Do you remember July 9th?"

Solis was charged with intoxication assault (two counts) and pleaded guilty to the charges. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, and according to news reports will be eligible for parole in 5 years. Prosecutor Allenna Bangs stated that there were no restitution charges, and that Solis is 21 years old and has no criminal history.

Chilli told ABC News that she plans to send more letters to Solis while he is serving his sentence, and that she hopes he will respond to the letter that was read in court. She said she hopes he will apologize, that it will "make me happy if he says he is sorry."

Even for Dallas personal injury lawyers who see tragedy every day, this is an extremely sad and unfortunate story. The victim in this case, who is now 9 years old, is strong-willed and determined to walk again one day. Hopefully Solis will have time to think about his actions while serving his sentence, and won't repeat the same mistake.

Fiery Dallas Crash Leaves 2 Dead, 2 Injured
October 9. 2012 17:47 by

On Friday October 5th, an early morning crash occurred between Lemmon Avenue and Hall Street along the northbound access road of U.S. Highway 75 Central Expressway, leaving two people dead and two injured.

Dallas police say one vehicle was involved in the crash which occurred when that vehicle ran off of the road, plowed through an iron fence, then struck a utility pole. At that point, the vehicle burst into flames.

News reports state that authorities were on the scene when firefighters arrived, and that the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames. Paramedics found two dead bodies inside the vehicle after the fire was extinguished. The victims' bodies were burned severely, making immediate identification impossible according to a representative from the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office. As of Friday morning, one victim was listed in serious condition, the other in critical condition.

An update to this story published just hours after the original story stated that it had been determined that speeding caused the crash. Those who lost their lives were identified as 25-year-old Joshua Armstead, the driver of the vehicle, and a passenger, 19-year-old Fred Pupenbroke III. The car that crashed and caught fire was a 2001 Dodge Stratus.

An apartment complex sets immediately beside the scene of the crash; a neighbor told police that some residents of the apartment building helped pull two occupants of the burning vehicle out of the car prior to it burning out of control. Police said those individuals were rushed to area hospitals.

As experienced Dallas car accident attorneys, we know tragic accidents happen all too often, taking the lives of young people who had bright futures ahead of them. Speeding is extremely common, particularly among teens and young adults - however thankfully, it doesn't always end like this story did.

The two individuals who sustained injuries in this crash will likely be facing substantial medical costs due to their injuries. If you or a loved one have been injured in a car accident due to the negligence of another party, consult with a skilled Dallas personal injury lawyer at once to determine if you have a claim, and if legal action should be taken to obtain the full compensation you deserve.

A Dallas car accident early this morning left one driver dead and the other uninjured. The car wreck happened around 7:30 a.m. this morning.
